January 29, 2007
Agenda for Power Team meeting/discussion: 9 AM (anticipate no longer than hour to ninety minutes).

¥ Background of assembly bookings
A. Mr. Borland and Faith Community Church involvement
B. Others from Faith Community
C. Opportunity to speak with Mr. Wilding

¥ Goals of assembly
A. Motivation,
B. AODA message
C. Dangers of Drugs
D. Resisting peer pressure.. .making good decisions
B. ABSOLUTELY NO RELGIOUS MESSAGE OR REFERENCE TO EVENING CRUSADES (AS REFERRED TO ON WEB-SITE).

Legal questions:

1. Whether the Power Team if pledging to refrain from religious or spiritual topics should be allowed to perform at assemblies in areas schools?

2. Whether the monies solicited by Faith Community Church Members from businesses and individuals are in any way a violation of church/state sponsorship of programming in schools

Dimensions of decision making to consider with this issue:

A. Ethical: Do we believe the Power Team message would be beneficial for our students per the intent all of us agreed to host assemblies?

B. Legal... is there a legitimate challenge or is this more a political grandstand of an individual (and others sharing his views) to impose his will on five school districts in his goal to have us reverse our earlier decisions?

C. Fiscal.. .not an issue unless "entanglement" with the way funds were raised to support assemblies or in some districts this will be viewed as a poor use of funds intended for messaging to our students i.e. AODA funds or Character Ed (specific to Jefferson)

D. Political: At this point everyone can anticipate this issue may POLARIZE our communities.

Does the anticipated message of the Power Team justify a polarizing community debate?

Would it be a fair compromise to all concern that we welcome the Faith Community Church to hold the evening programs as booked and scheduled, but that upon reflection not hold the assemblies thus eliminating any notion that the schools were connected with the promotion of a crusade.

After discussion, Superintendents will meet in private to discuss further in developing a position on the issue.
